Service Tag is Dell's identifier for support, warranty, drivers, and ownership records. It is usually printed on the chassis and may also appear in BIOS information or Dell utilities. The System Number on a BIOS password screen is the complete, device-specific value displayed by that exact screen. On some systems it may include familiar Service Tag characters plus an extra suffix — but it cannot be reconstructed from memory, and the sticker alone is not enough. Copy the full value directly from the screen.
The suffix after the separator helps identify the password-screen family, but it is not a device identifier and not a password. The characters before it matter too. Don't add spaces, skip characters, swap similar letters and digits, or send only the last group.
If “This computer system is protected by a password authentication system” appears before Windows starts, identify the password type first. From a “Dell Security Manager” heading alone you cannot tell what is locked: startup, BIOS settings, or the storage drive.
No universal factory password exists for all Dell laptops. A System or Admin password may have been set by you, a previous owner, or an IT department. “Admin” is the password type — not a hint to type “admin”. If you remember it, use it; if not, don't brute-force random lists.
Latitude, Inspiron, Vostro, XPS, and Precision differ in menus and security options. A model name like “Dell Latitude 5400 admin password” describes a symptom, not a recovery password. The exact model picks the right manual; the actual screen decides which options exist.
If the laptop was recently bought second-hand, ask the seller to remove the password. For a managed work device, contact your IT administrator. A known current password can be changed in the BIOS itself. Removing the CMOS battery or reinstalling Windows are not universal fixes, and Master Password Lockout can disable code-based recovery entirely.
A Dell admin password requested by F2 BIOS Setup is not the Windows administrator password. Admin/Setup protects firmware settings, System can block startup, and a drive password is a separate case entirely.

Protects firmware settings. Windows may still start, but boot order, Secure Boot, or virtualization stay locked.
That means only BIOS settings are protected — no need to reset Windows. If you remember the BIOS Admin password, change it in the normal settings using your model's manual. If not, ask whoever configured the laptop, then save the exact Setup prompt and the System Number if shown. Don't change Secure Boot, drive mode, or TPM while hunting for the password: those changes don't reset it and can affect booting or access to encrypted data.
Protects the storage device itself — not Windows sign-in and not BIOS settings. It is a separate data-access case, and release options don't exist for every drive: Dell states it cannot create release codes for NVMe SSDs.
A Windows password or PIN controls sign-in. BitLocker encrypts the Windows volume and asks for a 48-digit recovery key. Neither is a Dell System, Admin, or HDD/SSD password.
If the code on your Dell password screen ends in “-8FC8”, then 8FC8 is just a suffix. It is not the full code, not a password, and not proof that a recovery method will work.

Determine whether this is System at power-on or Admin/Setup in F2 — they are different password types. Stop if the screen says HDD, SSD, or Drive Password: storage locks are handled separately. For Windows sign-in use account recovery; for BitLocker use Microsoft's key path. Write down every character including the dash and suffix, and never publish the code.
If Master Password Lockout was enabled before the password was lost, code-based recovery is disabled. The remaining repair option may be replacing the motherboard or the locked drive. HDD/SSD passwords are handled separately, and Dell creates no release codes for NVMe SSDs. The 8FC8 suffix does not change these limits.
“Reset my Dell laptop password” can mean several unrelated problems. The right path depends on when the prompt appears and what exactly it says.
A System password is checked at power-on and can stop the machine before Windows. An Admin/Setup password protects changes inside F2 Setup even though Windows may still load. If one of these screens shows an error or system code, copy it exactly, including the suffix after the dash — but never publish the full code in comments or forums.
A forgotten Windows PIN needs no BIOS unlock. A Microsoft account password is recovered through Microsoft. BitLocker needs its recovery key, not a Dell BIOS code. An HDD or SSD password affects data access and is verified separately.
“Dell BIOS recovery” and “Dell BIOS password reset” sound similar but do not replace each other. One process repairs firmware; the other is about authentication.
BIOS Recovery attempts to restore correct firmware after corruption or a failed update, using disk or USB methods on supported models. It is not a password-removal tool, and the process is not available or successful for every model and fault.
There is no universal default Dell BIOS password. Admin and System passwords are set per device — there is no shared word for the whole lineup. “Not Set” means no password is assigned, not that there is a password to type in.
Dell does not publish a factory or universal master password that unlocks any Dell computer. System, Admin/Setup, and Hard Drive passwords protect different things and may have been set by the owner, a previous owner, an employer, or corporate IT policy. A word from an internet list proves nothing about your device, and repeated guessing can cause delays or lockout.
Those searches don't produce a common combination. Model manuals describe System and Admin as passwords you assign when none is set. Latitude 5400 and E5400 are different machines — manuals need the exact name. The same applies to Inspiron, Vostro, XPS, and Precision.
On some business systems, Master Password Lockout may be enabled. That setting can disable the usual recovery path, so no service should guarantee a result for every configuration. Check the full on-screen prompt before accepting any result or price.
